a season

Summer | Fall | Winter | Spring

Summer

I was able to visit a few months ago.

You looked healthy. Your version of healthy.

I watched you play with Ellie in the back yard.

You had coffee with me every morning through FaceTime.

I always asked how were you feeling.

You would say, in pain — you were always, unfortunately, in pain.

I watched you ache and sway in pain for years.

Fall

You called and said you weren’t feeling well.

I can see how tired you look.

You are on the couch napping before 10am.

I noticed it?

You had pneumonia and the hospital sent you home.

I told you to go back.

You went into septic shock.

I spoke to you while you slept.

You woke on the eleventh day.

Winter

You were admitted again — you have pain on your right side.

I flew to Florida.

You were told there’s a mass. More scans — three more masses were found on your lungs.

I fought.

You told me the hospital wanted to send you home to have the biopsy.

I fought again — No.

You had the biopsy in the hospital.

I read your pathology report before the physician —

You have cancer.

I knew.

You knew without me having to tell you.

I panicked.

Spring

I became obsessed with your medical chart — reading, rereading. Knowing.

You no longer have the Florida kissed skin.

I held you — embedding the memory of the smoothness of your skin.

You would ease off into sleep and squeeze my hand.

I watched your breathing — know I fought for you.

You died.

I had to tell mom.
