Fall 2026 Fashion Trends You Can Actually Wear After 40

Suede, leopard, rich color, and very good denim — Fall 2026 is giving us plenty to work with.

Fall fashion is finally starting to hit the early drops, and this year I am very interested.

Because after seasons of beige-on-beige, perfectly pressed basics and wardrobes that sometimes felt like they required a trust fund to achieve the appropriate level of “quiet,” fashion appears to be having fun again.

Fall 2026 is richer. More expressive. A little sexier. A little louder.

And — most importantly — wearable.

Vogue's current Fall 2026 reporting describes the season as a move toward more expressive dressing, with designers mixing practical silhouettes with richer textures, color and unexpected details. In other words, we don't have to throw away the classics. We're just giving them some personality again.

That is exactly where Stilettos & Mascara comes in.

We're taking the biggest trends appearing on the runway, in street style and now in early fall retail drops and figuring out how to wear them in actual life — and without actual runway prices.

And before you start filling a cart, remember: you probably already own part of these outfits.

We're building, not starting over.

All. The. Suede.

If I had to choose one trend to buy for Fall 2026, this would be it.

Suede is everywhere.

Chocolate brown jackets. Chestnut trenches. Midi skirts. Bags. Loafers. Boots.

Fashion Week street style was practically swimming in brown suede, while current fall shopping coverage continues to highlight suede jackets and bags as key transitional pieces.

And this is one trend that works beautifully after 40 because texture instantly makes a simple outfit feel intentional.

How I'd wear it —

For everyday:

Dark jeans + white tee + brown suede jacket + loafers.

For dinner:

Black fitted knit + chocolate suede midi skirt + pointed boots.

For work:

Wide-leg trousers + ivory blouse + cropped suede jacket.

And if you want maximum impact?

Go for the trench.

A long chocolate or chestnut faux-suede trench over an otherwise simple outfit gives you the entire Fall 2026 mood without requiring another trendy piece.

Get the look for less

Look at:

Zara • Target • Mango • H&M • Nordstrom Rack • ASOS

You do not need genuine suede to get this look.

A beautiful faux-suede jacket in the $50–$100 range can give you the same texture and color story — and frankly may be easier to live with when the weather decides to misbehave.

Big Animal Energy

Leopard + Zebra Are Neutrals Now

I am going to say something that some of you already knew:

Leopard never really left.

But Fall 2026 is giving it main-character status again.

Leopard coats were one of the standout street-style pieces during Fall 2026 Fashion Week, while designers including LaPointe and Norma Kamali also leaned into the print. Zebra appeared in collections including Simkhai.

The trick is not styling animal print like a novelty.

Treat it exactly like you would camel, brown or black.

Try:

Leopard midi skirt + black crewneck sweater.

Leopard coat + dark denim + loafers.

Zebra flats + straight jeans + burgundy sweater.

Python-print bag + an otherwise monochromatic outfit.

If an entire leopard coat feels like too much, don't force it.

Start at your feet.

A printed ballet flat, Mary Jane or small bag gives a basic fall outfit just enough personality.

Budget-friendly stores to watch

H&M • Nordstrom Rack • Mango • Zara • Target • DSW

And this is one trend where resale is gold.

Search Poshmark, ThredUp or your favorite consignment shop before buying new because there are decades of fabulous leopard coats already out there waiting for their second act.

S&M BUY: Leopard midi skirt or zebra flat.

The Pencil Skirt Got Interesting Again

Before anyone says, absolutely not, I wore that to work in 2007

This isn't that pencil skirt.

Fall's version is less corporate uniform and more 90s woman who knows exactly where she's going.

Vogue named the standout pencil skirt one of Pre-Fall 2026's important transitional pieces, while the Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy influence has also put the sleek skirt silhouette back into the conversation.

We're seeing:

Leather.

Suede.

Plaid.

Satin.

Wool.

Vinyl.

Texture.

Interesting seams.

And lengths hovering around or just below the knee.

The easiest way to wear one

Don't over-style it.

That's what makes the updated version feel modern.

Try:

Pencil skirt + white tee + oversized blazer

or

Pencil skirt + fitted knit + tall boots

or

Satin pencil skirt + sweatshirt + pointed flats

That high-low combination keeps the skirt from looking like you're headed into a quarterly budget meeting.

Unless you are.

In which case — congratulations, you look fabulous.

Budget brands to check

Mango • H&M • Zara • ASOS • Nordstrom Rack • Target

S&M BUY: Chocolate suede-effect, plaid or satin pencil midi.

Funnel Necks + Power Shoulders

This one might become my favorite outerwear trend of the season.

Funnel-neck jackets have been building momentum and remain firmly in the Fall 2026 conversation, including on models off duty and across designer collections. Meanwhile, power shoulders are showing up in sharply tailored jackets from labels including Veronica Beard and The Frankie Shop.

And I love it because it gives us structure without requiring much styling.

Button or zip that collar all the way up.

Add sunglasses.

Done.

You look expensive.

What to look for

A short funnel-neck jacket.

A funnel-neck trench.

A structured wool coat.

A blazer with a defined shoulder and slightly nipped waist.

That last combination is particularly good because it creates shape rather than simply swallowing the body in another oversized blazer.

Wear it with:

Funnel jacket + cigarette jeans + ballet flats.

Power blazer + white tee + pencil skirt.

High-neck coat + wide-leg trousers + sneakers.

And don't overlook H&M here — there are already several affordable funnel-collar jackets appearing in early fall inventory.

S&M BUY: Short taupe, rust or olive funnel-neck jacket.

Dark Wash Denim + The Return of the Cigarette Jean

Before anyone starts yelling:

No. Your wide-leg jeans are not canceled.

Keep them.

Wear them.

Love them.

But another silhouette has entered the chat.

Harper's Bazaar's Fall 2026 denim forecast specifically calls out dark indigo and skinny-to-cigarette silhouettes, alongside other denim shapes. Deep, clean indigo is also helping denim feel noticeably dressier this fall.

The important distinction?

We're not necessarily talking about painted-on jeggings.

The silhouette I would shop is a slim straight or cigarette jean:

Fitted through the hip.

Straight and narrow through the leg.

Clean hem.

Dark wash.

Minimal distressing.

Basically:

Not skinny.

Not wide.

Not barrel.

Not complicated.

Oversized button-down shirts.

Budget denim winners

You can easily test this trend without committing to $250 denim.

Look for dark rinse, dark indigo, clean straight or slim straight in the product description.

S&M BUY: Clean dark-indigo straight-leg jean

Fringe Is Back — And Meet the Doctor Bag

Fringe has apparently decided it no longer belongs exclusively at music festivals.

Good.

Because fall's version feels much more polished.

Think:

Brown suede hobo bags.

Long fringe crossbody bags.

Fringe-trimmed outerwear.

Movement along skirts and hems.

And sitting right beside all that softness is something far more structured:

The doctor bag.

Structured top-handle and retro bag shapes are making a strong return for Fall 2026, while designers including Magda Butrym have shown updated doctor-bag silhouettes. Current bag reporting is similarly leaning toward practical, structured and top-handle styles.

I love the contrast.

Slouchy fringe bag one day.

Structured vintage-looking doctor bag the next.

If you're only buying one:

Go brown.

Chocolate, tobacco, chestnut or cognac will pair with practically everything else we're talking about in this post.

Get the look for less

You can find fringe crossbody bags around the $25–$60 range and structured doctor-inspired bags without going anywhere near designer pricing.

S&M BUY: Chocolate fringe crossbody.

Shop the Trend — Not an Entire New Wardrobe

There will always be another microtrend.

Another TikTok aesthetic.

Another “must-have.”

Another pair of pants we've apparently all been wearing incorrectly for the last six months.

You do not need all of it.

Pick the trends that make you immediately think:

Oh, I would actually wear that.

For me?

Give me the chocolate suede, the burgundy leather, a fabulous leopard moment and a pair of dark jeans.

And maybe the doctor bag.

Fine.

Definitely the doctor bag.
