The Holiday Home Reset: Making Room for a Cozy, Beautiful Holiday Season

A little decluttering, a little decorating, and a whole lot of cozy. Here's how to get your home holiday-ready without losing your mind—or your entire paycheck.

There's something about the first few days of November that makes me want to rearrange my entire house.

Maybe it's the cooler mornings, the earlier sunsets, or the fact that suddenly every store smells like cinnamon, pine, and expensive candles. Whatever it is, November arrives, and I'm ready to trade my pumpkins for greenery, my lightweight throws for chunky knits, and my iced coffee for something that requires a festive mug.

But before we start hauling out the Christmas decorations and convincing ourselves we need another twelve decorative pillows, there's something we need to talk about.

The holiday home reset.

Not the kind where you spend an entire weekend scrubbing baseboards and organizing closets you'll never open again. I'm talking about a realistic, room-by-room refresh that makes your home feel warmer, more inviting, and ready for everything the season brings.

Whether you're hosting Thanksgiving, planning Christmas gatherings, or simply looking forward to spending December curled up on the couch with a glass of wine and absolutely nowhere to be, this one's for you.

And because this is Sandalwood & Serenity, we're keeping things beautiful, practical, and budget-conscious.

1. Start With a Clean Slate

Before you start hauling out the holiday decorations, give your living spaces a little breathing room. I'm a big believer in storage that doesn't look like storage, especially when the house is about to become a revolving door of guests, packages, and Christmas decorations.

One of my favorite ways to keep the living room looking pulled together is with a beautiful woven basket. The Threshold Open Weave Large Basket from Target is the kind of practical piece that can hold extra throws, magazines, and everyday clutter while still looking intentional.

If you prefer something with a little more texture, the Threshold Large Herringbone Weave Basket is another lovely option for keeping the room organized without sacrificing style.

Both can transition from the holiday season into everyday living, which is exactly what we're going for: less seasonal clutter, more pieces that earn their keep.

2. Cozy Up the Living Room for Winter

The living room is where I like to spend a little more time when the temperatures drop. There is nothing better than a ridiculously soft blanket, a few oversized pillows, and just enough holiday greenery to make the room feel festive without going overboard.

For a splurge-worthy addition, Pottery Barn's Cascade Faux Fur Throw is a beautiful choice for layering over a sofa or accent chair. Its ivory color works with practically any holiday palette, especially the chocolate browns, burgundy, and evergreen tones I'm loving this season.

But you don't have to spend a fortune to create the same cozy effect. Target's Threshold Fairisle Knit Throw with Faux Fur is an affordable alternative with a subtle holiday pattern.

For pillows, I'd keep things simple with a pair of Threshold Cream Faux Fur Decorative Pillows mixed with the pillows you already own.

The trick is layering textures rather than filling every available inch of the couch with decorations. Your guests should still have somewhere to sit.

3. Give the Kitchen a Holiday Hosting Refresh

The kitchen is about to become holiday headquarters, so I prefer decorating with pieces that are both practical and pretty.

Williams Sonoma always has some of my favorite holiday kitchen accessories, especially when it comes to seasonal linens. Their Woodland Berry Kitchen Towels bring a lovely touch of greenery and winter berries into the kitchen without making the space feel overly Christmas-themed.

And if you love a little nostalgia, the Embroidered Holiday Icon Towels are a fun way to add festive personality.

For countertops and open shelving, I love incorporating functional pieces that can double as décor. A wooden cutting board against the backsplash, a ceramic serving bowl filled with fresh oranges, or a beautiful serving platter can make the kitchen feel instantly more inviting.

Crate & Barrel's Plymouth Heritage Platter is a timeless option that works for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and everyday entertaining.

My rule? If it looks pretty enough to leave on the counter and you'll actually use it, it earns a place in the holiday kitchen.

4. Make the Bedroom Your Winter Sanctuary

The bedroom deserves a little holiday attention, too. Not necessarily twinkle lights and miniature Christmas trees everywhere, but fresh bedding, soft textures, and an atmosphere that makes you want to climb into bed a little earlier.

I'm a big fan of the understated look of Quince bedding. The European Linen Chambray Duvet Cover in natural is a beautiful foundation for a winter bedroom, especially paired with ivory pillows and a chunky knit blanket.

If you're feeling a little more festive, the European Linen Gingham Duvet Cover in Café introduces a subtle pattern without overwhelming the room.

Finish with a cozy throw, like Pottery Barn's Alpine Luxe Faux Fur Throw folded across the foot of the bed.

A few thoughtful updates can make the bedroom feel like a winter retreat without replacing everything you already own.

5. Set the Mood With Holiday Scents and Lighting

There's something magical about walking into a home that smells like fresh greenery, warm spices, and the holidays.

Anthropologie is one of my favorite places for beautiful candles that double as decorative accents. The Festive Balsam & Cedarwood Candle is a lovely choice for anyone who loves that fresh Christmas-tree scent.

For something a little softer and more sophisticated, the White Pine & Cashmere Candle brings together winter-inspired fragrance and beautiful packaging.

But candles aren't the only way to create ambiance. I love scattering flameless candles throughout the living room, entryway, and dining area, especially when pets are running around the house.

Target's Threshold LED Pillar Candle offers that warm candlelit look without an open flame.

You can mix different heights on a mantel, place a few on the coffee table, or group them with greenery on a decorative tray.

Just remember to keep battery compartments secure and decorative items out of your pets' reach.

6. Create a Holiday Hosting Station

Here's one holiday hosting trick I absolutely love: create one designated space for drinks, snacks, and entertaining essentials.

Whether you use a bar cart, buffet, or kitchen counter, having everything organized in one place makes gatherings feel so much easier.

Crate & Barrel has some beautiful entertaining pieces that can work long after the holidays. Their Marin White Stoneware 3-Part Server is ideal for olives, nuts, dips, and all those little snacks people graze on while waiting for dinner.

For something with a festive touch, the Nordic Trees Stoneware Serving Platter brings a little Christmas charm to your appetizer spread.

If you're looking for a piece you'll use throughout the year, their Burgundy Marble Serving Board is a beautiful way to introduce seasonal color while keeping things sophisticated.

Add a stack of cocktail napkins, pretty glassware, and a small arrangement of fresh greenery.

And, naturally, don't forget a few recipes from Cabernet & Chaos. Good food makes even the simplest holiday gathering feel special.

7. Don't Forget the Little Details

You don't need to decorate every surface in the house.

Sometimes the details make the biggest difference: a festive wreath, fresh greenery, a beautiful bowl on the entryway table, or a cozy throw draped across your favorite chair.

This is where I love mixing budget-friendly seasonal finds from Target with more timeless pieces from Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel.

A few simple additions can create that holiday feeling without turning your home into a Christmas decoration warehouse.

And remember, the goal isn't to buy more. It's to make what you already have feel special again.
