The Perimenopause Morning Reset - Building a Routine That Supports Your Nervous System

There’s a specific kind of tired that doesn’t go away with sleep.

It’s not the stayed-up-too-late tired or the had-a-long-day tired. It’s the low-level, constant exhaustion that follows you into the morning, weighs on your shoulders throughout the day, and makes even small tasks feel heavier than they should.

Midlife tired is different.

You wake up negotiating with the day.

Coffee helps—but not like it used to.

I find myself wandering to my 12 cup Hamilton Brew old school coffee maker three times before 9:30am — sometimes back at it later in the day for that mid-afternoon pick-me-up.

Sleep happens — but tossing and turning all night doesn’t actually equate to rest. Trying to find a position that won’t hurt your shoulders too much by morning. And knowing if you fall asleep on the couch, and stay there — your body will ache for the next five days straight with no relief.

And somewhere between brushing your teeth and starting into your empty refrigerator, you wonder when pushing through stopped working.

This isn’t laziness nor lack of motivation. The days I need to tell myself keep going is more often than not lately.

What is helping me transition didn’t come with a drastic overhaul.

I started a morning reset—rituals to support my nervous system, hormones, and energy before the day asked anything of me.

Starting the Day Without Immediate Input

No phone.

No email.

No news.

No scrolling.

Midlife nervous systems do not enjoy waking up ready to absorb the world’s chaos.

Starting the day with external input immediately puts your body into reaction mode—elevated cortisol before your feet even hit the floor.

I give myself ten quiet minutes before engaging with anything outside myself. Sometimes it’s just sitting. Sometimes it’s stretching. Sometimes it’s staring out the window doing absolutely nothing.

That pause matters more than any to-do list.

Hydrating Before I Caffeinating

Coffee isn’t the villain. Well, depending on how much you are consuming throughout the day.

Dehydration is.

I used to wake up and go straight for caffeine, wondering why I felt jittery, anxious, and crashed by mid-morning. Midlife bodies don’t forgive that sequence anymore.

Now I start with adaptogens, natural caffeine, and mushrooms.

It’s a small change that made a noticeable difference in energy and brain fog.

Take Supplements in the Morning—Not “Whenever I Remember”

Midlife fatigue is often cumulative. Hormones, stress, sleep, digestion, and nutrient depletion all stack quietly until they’re impossible to ignore.

Taking supplements consistently—and early—was a game changer.

Morning is when my body actually responds. Waiting until late afternoon or evening only added to the feeling of being behind all day.

This isn’t about fixing yourself. It’s about giving your body what it needs to function without constantly borrowing energy from tomorrow.

Eat Something—Even When You “Don’t Feel Like It”

Skipping breakfast used to feel efficient. In midlife, it feels like sabotage.

Blood sugar stability matters more than willpower. When I don’t eat early, I pay for it later—with crashes, irritability, and that wired-but-tired feeling that makes the rest of the day harder than it needs to be.

Nothing helps until I fuel my body. And as someone who doesn’t particularly eat breakfast and would fast until well past noon, I realized I was causing most of the chaos that was happening within.

Searching for a quick sugar treat to boost my insulin before passing out and thinking that was enough.

This doesn’t mean a full breakfast spread. Sometimes it’s protein. Sometimes it’s collagen in coffee. Sometimes it’s toast and something salty.

The goal isn’t perfection.

It’s fuel.

Not a breakfast person?

Protein matters—especially in midlife.

Daily Harvest smoothies make it easier to start the day nourished, steady, and supported when solid food isn’t happenin

Move Gently—Not Aggressively

There was a time when I believed workouts had to be punishing to be effective.

Midlife corrected that belief quickly.

Now my mornings start with movement that wakes up my body without overwhelming it. I’m talking about walking, stretching, light lifting (like 3 lbs, let’s not get crazy).

My joints are achy and weak at times, and the only reprieve is body movement.

Pay Attention to My Skin

Morning and evening skincare became another place where I stopped fighting my body.

Midlife skin doesn’t want to be stripped or shocked awake. It wants hydration, barrier support, and calm.

I simplified my routine and focused on products that protect instead of punish.

The result wasn’t dramatic overnight—but it was sustainable. And that matters more.

Using a Milky toner and Vani-Cream has been a life saver for my skin.

Get Outside—Even Briefly

Natural light in the morning regulates circadian rhythm, cortisol, and mood. I don’t negotiate with this anymore.

Even five minutes outside changes how the day feels.

Being a dog mom gives me the push I need to get outdoors, although this winter has been brutal and has kept me indoors more often than not. I’m certainly looking forward to getting back out there once Spring blooms once more.

Own The Day - Before It Owns You

This might be the most important ritual of all.

Before emails, before responsibilities, before anyone needs anything from me—I remind myself that I am not behind.

I don’t need to earn rest.
I don’t need to justify care.
And I don’t need to start the day already depleted.

Midlife taught me that energy isn’t something you chase. It’s something you protect.
